His parents, as stereotypical Asian parents, had high expectations for him to achieve academic success. However, he deviated from the path his parents had chosen for him and began practicing law because he could not see himself having a career in creative activities.

Desmond enrolled at the University of Melbourne after graduating from high school to study law. He then worked as a lawyer for a few months. Growing up, he was interested in a dance that helped pave the way for his acting career.
