He had a cervical neck fusion treatment in 2003, which helped him stabilize his neck by fusing two of his vertebrae.
In 2011, he had another cervical neck surgery that included the removal of a herniated disc, the removal of a bone spur, the implantation of a titanium plate and screws, and the removal of a bone spur.
Angle maintains that the operations have lessened his pain, enabling him to keep working.

Using a steel chair while training with Brock Lesnar in the later part of 2003 led to Angle’s neck injury returning.
Brock Lesnar, according to a former wrestler, hit him over the head with a chair before bringing it.
“When I tell you that he brought it, I really mean it,” he continued. The issue is that Brock struck Chris Benoit and I that evening with chairs.
Before the bout, he said to Brock, “Hey, swing sideways on my head because I had surgery on my neck, and I don’t want you to come over straight over the top,” to Chris.
