But as her fame increased, so did her critics. Nicks began getting threats from people who thought she was practicing witchcraft because she dressed like one in the late 1970s.
She admitted to the Los Angeles Times in 2014 that “at the beginning of my career, the whole idea that some strange, frightening people were writing, ‘You’re a witch, you’re a witch!’ was so arresting.”
She was so repulsed by the charges and the unwelcome attention that she stopped wearing black for approximately a year and started wearing apricot and sea foam green instead. But she did not feel justified in sacrificing her preferred appearance for others she deemed to be “freaks.”
She then switched back to wearing all black to signal that she was not going to back down. Since then, she has maintained that mindset.
Nicks played a “white witch” with supernatural abilities in the third season of American Horror Story: Coven in 2014. This is most likely the cause of inquiries like, “Is Stevie Nicks a white witch?”
She believed that she shouldn’t pass up the chance because of certain remarks she had received thirty years earlier. She thus performed “Rhiannon” and a few other songs on the show in addition to playing a fictionalized version of herself.
