Devyn Keith was detained after reports of theft at the University Drive Walmart surfaced. However, he was released the same day he was detained. The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) was called to 6140 University Drive at 1 p.m. on February 2, 2023, for an unrelated incident.
Police were told about a shoplifting incident at a nearby Walmart when they got on the scene. Shoplifter Devyn Keith, a council member since 2016, was located. Without incident, Keith was taken into custody and lodged in the Madison County Jail. The day after his arrest and initial investigation, Keith was released at 5:34 p.m. The next day, Keith addressed the issue on his Facebook page.
He made it clear that after using the self-service checkout, he had exited Walmart. However, he did not pay for a $20 pair of headphones that were in his cart. Following the statement, a number of people related to the situation and mentioned that they occasionally forget to pay for items at self-service checkouts. Following the shoplifting accusation, Keith’s friends and well-wishers have come together in support of him.

Following the shoplifting incident and his arrest, Devyn Keith was charged with one count of property theft—stealing items valued at $500 or less. The offense is a Class A misdemeanor in Alabama, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $6,000 fine. According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Councilman Keith is currently the subject of new theft allegations.
Already, the Sheriff’s office has issued an arrest warrant for the Council member. After the second warrant, a representative stated that Keith was anticipated to improve himself. Four misdemeanor charges are being brought against the District 1 council member for allegedly stealing additional items from a Walmart store.
The Huntsville Police Department initially took care of the situation. It has now been transferred to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office in order to remove any potential conflicts of interest or impressions. John Taylor, Devyn Keith’s attorney, stated that he was unable to comment at this time.
