California Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein looked remarkably thin when she returned to the Capitol last week after missing more than two months of work due to shingles.
She was wheeled through the Senate’s marble hallways in a wheelchair, her left side motionless, one eye nearly closed, and her expression bewildered. She raised her voice to complain about something being in her eye.
Ms. Feinstein encountered several challenges following her hospital admission in February, some of which she has kept private. She was diagnosed with shingles.
The shingles also damaged her neck and face, causing Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a facial paralysis that impairs vision and balance.
Following the first allegation by The New York Times, a spokesperson confirmed it on Thursday, claiming that the ailment had “resolved itself” in March.
Additionally, encephalitis, a rare but possibly fatal shingles complication, was brought on by the virus.
What Was The US Senator’s Status?
Due to a difficult case of shingles and its aftereffects, Feinstein missed almost three months of Senate activity earlier this year.
Feinstein rejoined the Senate in the middle of May and made her first public appearance since February. She looked weak, one eye nearly closed, as they rolled her into the Capitol.
She reported that although she was “still experiencing some side effects from the shingles virus,” she had made “significant progress.”
A few days later, her office declared that her health issues weren’t as minimal as first claimed. The Democrat, who was 89 years old, suffered from encephalitis, often known as brain swelling, or Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
The confirmation process for President Biden’s judicial candidates dragged down while she was away from the Judiciary Committee, and Democrats had grown frustrated with her protracted absence from Washington owing to health concerns.
Some in her party called for her resignation because Democrats needed every vote they could obtain in a closely divided Senate.
In early August, she experienced a brief hospital admission following a fall at her San Francisco residence.
Recent concerns about Feinstein’s lifespan have been raised by her advanced age and apparent memory loss. Early in 2023, she made the decision not to compete for reelection, which led to a political battle for her seat in 2024.
