Coleman Hutzler, the new defensive coordinator at Mississippi State University, is a Las Vegas native. He was a linebacker for Middlebury College in Vermont from 2002 to 2005. Hutzler began his coaching career as a defensive assistant at the University of San Diego in 2006.

He was appointed as a recruiting assistant at Stanford in 2007 and stayed there from 2008 to 2009. Hutzler began coaching outside linebackers for New Mexico in 2012 and stayed until 2013 when he returned to Florida. From 2010 to 2011, he was also an assistant linebacker and special teams coach at Florida.

Coleman returned in the same position in 2014, contributing to the team’s second-best punt return average in the SEC. He was a member of the nation’s finest defensive team when he was recruited by Boston College in 2015. A year later, he transferred to the University of South Carolina, where he spent four seasons.

In his final season, Hutzler’s South Carolina special teams finished in the top 20 nationally in net punting and punt return average. While at South Carolina, Hutzler was nominated for the Broyles Award. After leaving South Carolina, Hutzler spent one season with Texas. At Texas, his defense was ranked in the top nine in the FBS.

Coleman was named special teams coordinator at Ole Miss in 2021, and at Alabama a year later. In his first season with the Crimson Tide, Hutzler helped Alabama rank 16th in sacks per game. And in the 2023 season, he helped Alabama’s special teams become one of the best in the country. They ranked sixth in yards per punt and fifteenth in field goal percentage.

Coleman Hutzler and his wife, Cobey Hutzler (née Shoji), have two children. Micah and Leila are the children of the sporty couple. Cobey Hutzler graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and communications in 2001.

At both UNLV and Michigan, she was a defensive specialist/setter. She formerly coached at the Rebel Volleyball Club in Las Vegas, the Punahou School in Honolulu, and the Triangle Volleyball Club in North Carolina. Cobey began her tenure at Stanford as the Director of Volleyball Operations, and she completed her sixth year in 2013.

Dave Shoji, Coleman’s father-in-law, was the head coach of the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Women’s Volleyball team. He was the winningest coach in Division I women’s volleyball history, with 1,107 victories, and he held that position from 1975 to 2017.

Rainbow won four national championships while he was in charge. Micah, Cobey and Coleman’s son, was born two years later on July 17, 2010. Leila, Cobey’s second child, was born in 2014. Hutzler has shared photos of his family on his Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts.
