The Boys’ Queen Maeve, played by Dominique McElligott, took a risk in the season three finale. In the decisive battle, she ended up being the one to save everyone around her.
However, Maeve took a significant risk by doing so. And by doing this, she put her life and the character’s future beyond season three in danger.
But does this imply that McElligott will no longer be playing Queen Maeve in The Boys? Is it another plot twist, though?
In the season 3 conclusion of “The Boys,” Dominique McElligott’s Queen Maeve vanished.
Maeve is fighting The Homelander, played by Antony Starr, along with Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher, Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy (kind of), and others in the season three finale.
Everyone present at the scene is terrified of the numerous casualties their conflict may result in after The Homelander kills Black Noir. So they attempt to break up the conflict.
Maeve and Butcher work together to take down Homelander in the middle of this. At the Vought Tower, the first two clash with the second.
When things start to go sideways, Homelander unexpectedly sides with Ryan, and Soldier Boy reaches the point where he is about to blow up and kill everyone in the room.
So, in a brave act, Maeve offers herself as a sacrifice and leaps out the window with Soldier Boy.
The setting suggests Maeve might indeed be dead. To everyone’s amazement, she proves to be far stronger than anyone anticipated and barely makes it out alive.
Maeve might not have been the ideal choice to sacrifice herself given the circumstance, but what’s done is done, regardless of how the writers handled the scenario. And this may be the last we see of Maeve on The Boys as played by McElligott.
Does Dominique McElligott intend to leave “The Boys”?
After her battle with Soldier Boy, Queen Maeve is helpless, or at least that’s what the show suggested. Could McElligott’s stint on the program be coming to an end, at least as Queen Maeve?
Even before the season finale aired, viewers had doubts about Maeve’s survival. Twitter is flooded with farewell messages for Maeve and McElligott.
Even if Maeve is not dead, those types of tweets are now getting more frequent by the second. Many believe that she will be eliminated from the competition in season 4.
Some others do believe Maeve will have a chance at leading a typical life, though. Without her superhuman abilities, she could start afresh and permanently put her superhero days behind her.
Although there haven’t been any formal statements on McElligott’s future on the show, one thing is almost certain: if she does, her character’s arc might change.
