Don Shane, a former Channel 7 (WXYZ TV) sportscaster, died at the age of 70 on Friday, February 24, 2023, at his California home. His wife, Mona, verified the news on Saturday, alongside Diana Lewis, another WXYZ seasoned news presenter, to recall and pay homage to the late sports reporter.

Shane began his more than three-decade career as a reporter for Detroit’s Channel 4 in the early 1980s. He joined Channel 7 in 1989 after brief stops in Chicago and Boston, and quickly rose to prominence as a top sports reporter, covering many historic sporting events.

He resigned in February 2012, at the age of 60, to spend more time with his family. As he was leaving WXYZ TV, he said:

“I’ve been extremely fortunate. “What I’ve seen and done has far exceeded my expectations.”

He passed away surrounded by his wife, Mona, and their two children, Justin and Lindsay.

Don Shane’s family has yet to reveal the reason for his mortality. Rumors circulated that he was ill for some time after retiring, but the nature of his illness was unknown. According to unconfirmed reports, the sportscaster was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and confusion at a young age. Mona, his wife of 38 years, as well as his two daughters and grandchildren, abandon him.
