How did Donnie Yen start his Professional Career?
At 14, Donnie dropped out of school to focus on martial arts. He joined the Beijing Wushu Team after his parents registered him in a Beijing fitness program. At the age of 16, he began receiving taekwondo instruction. Donnie was up in a musical family; his mother sang soprano and his father played the violin.
With help from his parents, Yen started taking piano lessons before entering the entertainment business. Before making his film debut in 1984, he later expanded his repertoire to include breakdancing and hip-hop. Donnie achieved success with “Once Upon a Time in China II” in 1992 after performing a number of lesser roles.
He then resumed playing the protagonist in hit films like “Iron Monkey,” “Hero,” and “Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen.” He had an appearance in “Fist of Fury” before moving back to the US and choreographing action sequences for films like “Blade II” and “Highlander: Endgame.”
