Weeks after a major investigation found systemic racism, Lawrence said cops may be “as cruel as they want” without consequences. In 1993, a Southeast London racist assault killed Doreen Lawrence’s son Stephan Lawrence.
Lawrence fought for her son and other racial crime victims after the probe. She wants police changes. Community connections earned Doreen the OBE in 2003. In remembrance of her son, she founded the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust to leave a good legacy.

Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old black British teen from Plumstead, southeast London, was murdered on Well Hall Road in Eltham on April 22, 1993.
The event changed laws, police procedures, and public views of racism and police. The murder partially repealed double jeopardy. Six individuals were arrested but not charged. Lawrence’s family’s private prosecution resulted in no convictions.
Lawrence ran for Cambridge Harriers and appeared in Denzel Washington’s For Queen and Country as a youngster.
On January 3, 2012, Dobson and Norris were convicted of murdering Lawrence. They got a period of imprisonment at Her Majesty’s pleasure, equivalent to a life sentence, since they were children.
Baroness Lawrence founded the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation to help young people achieve their aspirations while advocating for justice and racial equality. In 2018, Theresa May established a National Day of Remembrance on April 22, Stephen’s murder anniversary.
