On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, Dr. Charles Stanley, senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta and founder of In Touch Ministries, died at home. He turned 90 years old earlier this year. The First Baptist Church of Atlanta confirmed his death in a statement, saying:
“Dr. Charles F. Stanley, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Atlanta, died peacefully at his home this morning.” We appreciate his over 50-year record of dedicated leadership and spiritual counseling as FBA’s Senior Pastor.”
Charles Stanley had been the pastor of First Baptist Atlanta for 50 years, according to an obituary. On September 25, 1932, the well-known preacher was born and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In 1969, he became a member of the First Baptist Church. He previously served as pastor at Fruitland Baptist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina, as well as First Baptist Church of Fairborn in Ohio, as well as First Baptist Church of Miami and Bartow, Florida.

Charles Stanley was born and raised in Virginia in 1932. When his father died when he was 29, his mother raised him. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Richmond University, he was called to the ministry at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church in Danville, Virginia.
Stanley then went on to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for his Divinity Degree, followed by Luther Rice Seminary for his master’s and doctoral degrees in Theology. He began his pastoral career in 1957 at Fruitland Baptist Church in North Carolina, where he also taught homiletics, preaching, and evangelism to students at the Fruitland Bible Institute.
In 1959, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Fairborn, Ohio; in 1962, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Miami, Florida, where he founded the George Mueller Christian School in 1966; and in 1968, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bartow, Florida.
He married Anna Margaret Johnson in 1955, and they had two children, Andy and Becky. Their marriage, however, ended in divorce in 2000. Anna passed away in 2014. The pastor’s funeral or memorial service have yet to be discussed by the pastor’s family.
