Accident Caused Dr. Latacha’s Death
The police report states that on September 10, at approximately 6 p.m., Dr. Latacha was traveling on Interstate 580 in his Tesla Model S when he was involved in an accident with a semi-truck that had veered into his lane.
The truck driver reportedly failed to maneuver or stop away from Dr. Latacha’s car because he was intoxicated and under the influence of drugs. The collision caused significant damage to both cars and ignited a fire that swiftly destroyed both.
Dr. Latacha was unable to escape from his car. Within minutes, firefighters were on the scene, but the fire’s intensity prevented them from saving him.
After approximately an hour, they were able to put out the fire, but by then, Dr. Latacha was too late. The paramedics declared him dead at the site.
The truck driver was arrested by the police for driving under the influence, reckless driving, and vehicular manslaughter after sustaining minor injuries. He’s awaiting trial right now.
Physician Matthew Latacha Life and Work
On March 15, 1971, Dr. Matthew was born in Chicago, Illinois. The physicist did well in school and had an early interest in science and maths.
After attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) after graduating from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in 1989, Matthew went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in physics there in 1993.
At Stanford University, he pursued further education, graduating with a master’s in 1995 and a doctorate in 1999 under the guidance of Professor Steven Chu, who would go on to win the Nobel Prize and become the US Secretary of Energy.
In 2000, Dr. Latacha joined the University of California, Berkeley faculty as an assistant professor of physics following the completion of his doctoral studies.
He advanced through the ranks swiftly, and in 2008 he was appointed full professor. Additionally, he was a dual appointment at the Kavli Energy NanoSciences Institute and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
In addition, he was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the Optical Society of America.
