Drawing By Michelangelo Included In Historical Art Show

Michelangelo

Later, a variety of previously unseen historical artifacts and works by Michelangelo will be displayed. On Saturday, the Harley Foundation in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, will unveil the Portland Collection at Welbeck Abbey.

The Cavendish family amassed the collection over generations.

It also has an earring worn by King Charles I when he was executed in 1649.

Since the 17th century, the Welbeck Estate has been owned by the same family.

The director of the Harley Foundation, Lisa Dee, stated, “With this exhibition, we’re displaying early Tudor and Jacobean portraits that have never before been on public display.”

Michelangelo’s 1538 sculpture – Madonna del Silenzio – is also on display.

The red chalk drawing is one of only a few famed Italian works on display in the United Kingdom.

Ms. Dee noted that Worksop is one of just four locations in the United Kingdom where Michelangelo is on public display.

The pearl earring worn by King Charles I during his execution is also on display, having been removed from his severed head.

Ms. Dee stated that her favorite item was a 1630s picture of the former Countess of Southampton, Rachel de Ruvigny.

Additional highlights include a seldom shown painting of Lady Margaret Stuart, Countess of Nottingham, by Paul van Somer, which dates to approximately 1620 and depicts her wearing an ornate dress with an implausibly plunging neck, which experts say demonstrates her power and prestige.

The display will run until December 2025 and admission is free.
