Bruce Johnson, 71, passed away on March 3 from natural causes. He gained notoriety while serving 44 years as a newscaster for CBS station WUSA9. His years of dedicated service as a Washingtonian who made a big impact on the DC area will be remembered. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser paid tribute to Bruce on Twitter by writing:
“Bruce Johnson was a titan of Washington, DC, journalism, a proud author, a father, grandfather, and husband.” He has been a part of my life since I was a young child, presenting the news and giving DC residents a voice, like many other Washingtonians. I’m in shock. ‘Rest in Peace’

According to WUSA9, Johnson passed away from heart failure on Sunday morning in Delaware. However, he has faced a comparable issue before. He suffered a heart attack in 1992 while covering a story in Washington, DC.
When he felt his chest tighten, his cameraman took him to the closest hospital. Doctors found that he had suffered from a serious heart attack, also referred to as a widowmaker. He trained for and completed the 26.2-mile Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC as a part of his recovery.
Career
After three years, he received his degree from Kentucky State University, and WCPO-TV was where he launched his broadcasting career. In 1973, he graduated with a bachelor’s in political science from Northern Kentucky University. The University of Cincinnati later awarded Johnson a master’s degree in public administration.
He gave the commencement address at NKU in 2018 and received an honorary doctorate. Bruce was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the National Press Club.
He was also a national leader for cancer and heart attack survivors. Bruce began working for WUSA9 TV in 1976, and he later rose to prominence as an award-winning anchor and reporter for important Washington, D.C., news events. He and Bruce Johnson co-hosted the weekly Channel 9 broadcast at 6 o’clock and Off Script.
In addition to his own experience and the inspiring comeback stories of 11 other male and female cardiac survivors, he wrote the book Heart to Heart. He advertised it in Beijing and Shanghai when it was published in China by the Peoples Medical Publishing House. In 2012, Johnson released All Or Nothing: The Victor Page Story. It followed Victor Page’s life, a former NBA is hopeful.

As a newscaster, Bruce gained popularity with the general public during his career. When word of his passing spread, both the general population and famous people posted tributes to him on Twitter. In addition to his wife Lori, Brandon, Kurshanna, and Carolyn, Johnson is also survived by three grandchildren.
