On Sunday, November 26, 2023, two teens lost their lives in a deadly All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV) accident near Lake Edinburg, Texas.
The victims were identified by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department as 17- and 18-year-old former Edinburgh High School classmates.
The seventeen-year-old driver of the ATV lost control and jumped into the canal next to Lake Edinburg, according to the investigating officials.
She had never driven a UTV before. Earlier this year, Leila Elizabeth Arias and Jaidy Alcala, the victims, received their diplomas from Edinburgh High School.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department reports that two little children in rural Edinburg perished in a terrible event.
The event took place in the 6400 block of Rio Grande Care, close to Lake Edinburg, at around 6:50 p.m.
While riding an ATV, Leila Arias and Jaidy Alcala lost control and fell into a canal. The girls were stuck inside the UTV, which was half submerged.
They were accompanied by two other females who were able to flee and seek assistance from a neighboring residence. The homeowner’s wife gave them a ride to the hospital after they called 911.
When the deputies got to the scene, they discovered the UTV upside down in the canal, in water that was between two and three feet deep.
After removing the girls from the water, the deputies started CPR. Even when an ambulance took them to a hospital, it was already too late.
They were declared deceased. To ascertain the cause of death, the judge of the peace issued an order for an autopsy.
