Colby began his career at CAN in 2010 as a principal analyst and division lead of Global Strategic Affairs, where he stayed for over three years before becoming a Robert M Gates Senior Fellow in 2014. He was a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security for more than three years until 2017. The following year, he was appointed as the United States Department of Defense’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Force Development, where he assisted in the implementation of the Department’s 2018 National Defense strategy.
Elbridge Colby also served as the Director of Defense Program at CNAS in 2018, where he led the center’s work on defense issues, and the same year, he also joined WestExec Advisors as a senior advisor, where he currently works. In 2019, he co-founded the Marathon Initiative for Great Power Competition for the United States and its allies in Washington, DC, where he is also the principal. Aside from that, he is the author of “Strategy of Denial: American Defense in an Age of Great Power Conflict.”
