Fanchini participated in three Olympics between her two World Cup victories, placing 12th in the downhill in 2014. She was unable to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang due to her illness.

Marta Bassino, another Italian who competed at the world championships in Meribel, France, won the super-G on the same day that Fanchini passed away. Federica Brignone, a different ex-teammate, won the combined gold two days later.

Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin said the 37-year-old would not be forgotten. Her friends send their condolences to the entire Fanchini family, whose love and kindness have made such a good difference in their sport and the world.

She stated on Twitter that she experienced many emotions on Elena’s passing. She has a lot she wants to say, but the loss of Fanchini is what’s on her mind the most. The day after winning silver in the super-G at the World Championships in Meribel, Mikaela shared this on Twitter.

How Was Elena Fanchini’s Health Affected by Her Illness?

Sadly, Elena Fanchini passed away from a severe disease. She had long tried to prevail in her most challenging conflict as a former skier.

Her promising professional career was cut short by a cancer diagnosis, and she passed away on Wednesday, according to the Italian Winter Sports Federation.

The federation confirmed in a brief statement that Fanchini passed away at her Solato home after a protracted illness. She was forced to withdraw from the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018 owing to health issues, and it took her nearly five years to pass away.

After undergoing cancer treatment, Elena was given the all-clear to resume her training but struggled with injuries until she decided to retire in 2020. Her last race was in December 2017.
