Gilyard was born on Christmas Eve in 1955 into a military family in Moses Lake, Washington. He is the son of Barbara and U.S. Air Force officer Clarence Gilyard Sr. Gilyard, the second of six children.

Gilyard’s family originally hails from New Orleans, Louisiana, although he was reared in Air Force bases in Hawaii, Texas, and Florida. Although he was largely reared as a Lutheran, he later became a Catholic in the 1990s.

Gilyard was a young man who attended Eisenhower High School and lived in Rialto, a San Bernardino, California, suburb.

He attended the Air Force Academy for a year as a cadet after earning honors in high school, then left the service to enroll at Sterling College. He graduated from high school in 1974.

In college, he played football and became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He received a tennis scholarship as well, but he left school before completing his studies.

Gilyard, who lived with his parents while in high school, was consumed with women, alcohol, and occasionally narcotics. He and a friend relocated to Long Beach, California in response to his parents’ pleas to leave.

At California State University, Long Beach, Clarence studied acting and worked as a server while hunting for acting gigs.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Gilyard and his roommate co-owned the business, where he eventually rose to the position of manager. For a little period, he put this on hold to go to work marketing industrial chemicals.

Gilyard went back to school in 2003 and earned a master of fine arts in theater performance from Southern Methodist University.

On January 17, 2016, Gilyard appeared on stage in Driving Miss Daisy as Hoak Colburn with Sheree J. Wilson, a former Walker, Texas Ranger co-star, at the University of New Mexico’s Popejoy Hall.
