Elijah Cummings was born on January 18, 1951, to sharecroppers Ruth and Robert Cummings in Baltimore, Maryland. As a young member of Howard University’s student government, he began his political career.
He practiced law for 19 years after receiving his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Howard University.
But he decided to forego his legal career in order to run for and win the Maryland seventh congressional district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996.
He had previously spent 14 years in the Maryland House of Delegates and had held a public position for 23 years.
Cummings had been a significant Democratic presence in house committees on a national basis. As chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform during his final year in office, he engaged in a verbal duel with Donald Trump, who was the focus of the committee’s inquiries.
Cummings was in charge of the investigation into the president’s impeachment at the time of his passing. As of right now, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) will preside as acting chairperson.
