Balwani is currently facing criminal and fraud charges. President Balwani and Holmes were charged with two charges of conspiring to conduct wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud by a federal grand jury in 2018.
Holmes was found responsible for any charges of fraud in January 2022.
Sunny Balwani began working for Theranos when?
Despite having no prior experience in medicine, Balwani was first appointed as Theranos’ president and chief operating officer in 2009.
However, the workforce soon realized that Balwani’s role at the company was one of an enforcer.
Balwani allegedly acted as a type of watchdog for the company, according to Nick Bilton, a journalist who followed Theranos for Vanity Fair and authored several investigative stories on the company.
Balwani “ensured that scientists and engineers at Theranos did not talk to one another about their work,” according to Bilton, and “He would scold them in emails when staff questioned the accuracy of the Company’s blood-testing equipment.”
