On December 12, 1991, in Melbourne, Australia, Don Cole gave birth to Ellie Cole. Her father was athletic, and both her mother and grandfather were swimmers. When she was two years old, she was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma wrapped around the nerves in her right leg. On February 14, 1994, her right leg was amputated above the knee after unsuccessful chemotherapy techniques failed to treat her cancer. Cole’s mother, Jenny, enrolled her in swimming classes as part of her rehabilitation eight weeks after the surgery.

Cole’s tutors predicted it would take her up to a year to learn to swim in a straight line, but it only took her two weeks. She was included in ‘Rising Phoenix,’ a documentary film about the Paralympic Games planned to be released in 2020. Ellie attended Frankston High School and Mount Eliza North Primary School, both in Melbourne’s Frankston area.
