Emmett Williams was born in South Carolina on April 4, 1925. American poet, artist, and essayist is known for his association with the Fluxus movement. He published a 1991 autobiography entitled My Life in Fluxus – And Vice Versa. He collaborated with artist Claes Oldenburg on a piece called “Store Days.” He studied at Kenyon College and at the University of Paris. He later worked in Switzerland as an ethnologist’s aide.

Career
Williams was the European coordinator of Fluxus in the 1960s, and a founding member of the Domaine Poetique in Paris, France, with French artist Robert Filliou. During his dissident years, Williams was friends with Václav Havel, and he translated some of Havel’s literature into English. From September 1975 to June 1976, Williams was a guest artist in residence at Mount Holyoke College, where he taught. Williams’ autobiography, My Life in Fluxus – And Vice Versa, was published in 1991 by Stuttgart’s Edition Hansjörg Mayer & reissued the following year by Thames and Hudson.
He was awarded the Hannah-Höch-Preis in 1996 for his life’s work. In 2007, he died in Berlin.
