Eric’s father, Bill Musselman, was also a basketball coach. He and his father are the NBA’s first father-son coaching duo. Clifford Musselman and Bertha Combs had five children, one of them was Bill. Bill began playing basketball, football, and baseball at a young age, despite his father’s lack of athletic experience.

He moved lived with his mother after she married James Miller. Despite being a stepfather, James raised Bill as if he were his child and was important in advancing his sports career. Bill went to Wooster High School, where he graduated as the school’s second-best all-time leading scorer in 1958.

He continued his basketball career at Wittenberg College. He began his coaching career as the head coach at Kent State University High School in the 1960s. Musselman went on to coach in several leagues, including the NBA, CBA, NCAA, and ABA. Bill died of a stroke on October 30, 1999, in Rochester, Minnesota. He was an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers at the time. Bill and his wife, Kris, have two more children.
