Eric Omondi is arrested for obstructing Parliament Road
On February 21, comedian Eric Omondi was arrested after attempting to assault Parliament in order to protest the high cost of living. Omondi and other activists blocked Parliament Road in Nairobi’s CBD to pressure the government to reduce the cost of essential goods.
The officers guarding the installation, however, repelled the demonstrators, and their attempt to storm the Parliament buildings failed. Eric began his career as a news reporter for NTV Kenya before meeting Daniel Ndambuki in 2006. The protesters alarmed the police guarding the Parliament buildings, who responded by firing tear gas at them.
Leaders of Azimio la Umoja, who urged Kenyans to put additional demands and pressure on President William Ruto’s government over the country’s consistently rising cost of living, offered their support to the protestors. Eric Omondi, a comedian, was among those detained on Tuesday after attempting to breach Parliament buildings.
The comedian attempted to rally a group of young people protesting the high cost of living in order to meet with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula. The protesters, a group of ripped, shirtless men wearing chains around their necks, held placards with criticisms of high commodity prices.
