After Esteban-Loaiza graduated from Mar Vista High School, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an undrafted free agent on 1991, March 21. He also played for the Mexico City Red Devils of the Mexican Summer League during the 1993 season and also played with the Mexicali Aguilas of the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico. After, in the year 1995, he moved to a big-league club Pittsburgh Pirates.
