The parents of Michigan school gunman Ethan Crumbley have filed an appeal with the Michigan Supreme Court in response to a lower court’s decision that they must go to trial.
Jennifer and James Crumbley entered not-guilty pleas to four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the mass shooting at Oxford High School on November 30, 2021.
Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 at the time, is believed to have used a semiautomatic weapon belonging to his father, James Crumbley, to murder four students and injure a number of others.
Last year, the teenager pled guilty to all counts against him, including terrorism and homicide.
Jennifer Crumbley and her spouse James Crumbley, the parents of Ethan Crumbley, attended their pre-trial hearing on March 22, 2022, in Pontiac, Michigan, with defense attorney Mariell Lehman.
James and Jennifer Crumbley are accused of leaving a firearm accessible and ignoring warning flags.
In the meantime, the Crumbleys’ defense attorneys maintain that they cannot be held criminally responsible for their son’s independent decisions.

The Michigan Court of Appeals has determined that the parents of the Oxford High School shooter will be tried on four counts of involuntary manslaughter for the four deaths their son Ethan Crumbley caused in a November 2021 school shooting. This case has the potential to establish a standard.
James and Jennifer Crumbley have stated that the accusations are baseless and that they should not be held responsible for the homicides of their sons.
A panel of justices for the state’s appellate court noted the potential precedent-setting significance of this case – holding parents culpable for a child’s offenses – but described the circumstances as unique and uncommon in a written ruling submitted on Thursday.
The court stated that because Crumbley’s conduct “was reasonably foreseeable, and that is the ultimate test that must be applied,” such concerns are “significantly diminished.”
The judge’s decision contained text messages sent by Crumbley’s parents months before the shooting. He described his paranoia and hallucinations, which included the notion that a demon was throwing objects around the home.
Crumbley reportedly confessed to an acquaintance that he believed he was experiencing a mental breakdown and sought medical assistance from his parents, but that his father told him to “suck it up” and his mother scoffed at him.
In a concurring opinion, Judge Michael Riordan stated that the case was exceptional because it was evident that Crumbley had mental health issues and was contemplating violence, and because his parents still gave him a firearm.
