Charges & Arrest of Ethen Vanderpool: Why Was He Arrested?

On November 15, 2018, Ethen Vanderpool, then 15 years old, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of Mt. Juliet High School student JayShawn Taylor, who was 16 years old.

Vanderpool’s house was the scene of the shooting; Taylor and he had gone there with two females to smell glue.

Court evidence states that Vanderpool shot Taylor to death after becoming enraged because he felt the female he was dating was staring at her. He then grabbed Taylor’s shirt and pushed him into the bed.

When Vanderpool first called 911, he said he was protecting the two children from an intruder breaking into their house.

Additionally, the girls first told falsehoods about the event before subsequently revising them to say there was no break-in.

In March 2019, Vanderpool’s case was transferred from juvenile court to adult court.

Following a four-day trial, a jury found Vanderpool guilty of second-degree murder in September 2022.

The prosecution’s first-degree murder accusation was rejected by the jury. Judge Brody Kane sentenced Vanderpool to a maximum of 22 years in jail for second-degree murder in January 2023.
