Ettore Messina began his coaching career in 1989 with Virtus Bologna, where he won two EuroLeague Championships in 1997-98 and 2000-01, as well as two Italian Cups in 1999, 2001, and 2002. Similarly, he joined Benetton Treviso for three years, winning three Italian Cups and reaching the EuroLeague final, which he lost.
Messina joined CSKA Moscow in 2005. Later, he led the team to the EuroLeague championship in 2005–06. Under Messina, CSKA won the EuroLeague championship for the second time in 2008. In the 2008–09 season, he led CSKA to the Russian Championship and the EuroLeague Final.
On June 18, 2009, he was chosen as the new head coach of Real Madrid in the Spanish League. Messina, Real Madrid’s head coach, resigned in March 2011 after a spate of poor performances.
On July 15, 2014, he was also hired as an assistant coach by the San Antonio Spurs. Messina was the head coach of the senior men’s Italian national team from 1993 to 1997. He led Italy to the EuroBasket championship in 1997.
