He is a native Texan born into a religious family. Abraham was born on February 20, 1939, in Corpus Christi, Texas, United States. He is one of six children of his parents. Abraham Gonzalez Quintanilla, Sr., and Maria Tereza Calderon, his parents, gave birth to him.
His parents were gleaners of vegetables, fruits, and cotton. Before graduating, he left Roy Miller High School to pursue a career in the music industry. Later that same year, in 1957, he joined a musical band comprised of fellow alumni.
