Precious Garcia was born in the Philippines but emigrated when she was 19 years old. Mitchell was taught to value her Filipino heritage by her mother. Mitchell experienced family gatherings and weddings, which made her more appreciative of her mother’s heritage. When Shay entered high school, her viewpoint, however, shifted.
When she was ten years old, her parents moved to a wealthy area in Vancouver. “I felt uncomfortable with myself in high school. My friends were all blondes with blue eyes. While the nannies of my pals were not Filipino, my mother is.
To hide her Filipino heritage, Shay started wearing contacts and dying her hair blonde. When Mitchell started giving role auditions, her faith in her background returned. She understood that her exotic appearance was a primary factor in her selection.

Shay and her father have a tight relationship. She frequently posts photos of her Irish and Scottish dad on social media. On October 30, 2019, Shay uploaded a video to her YouTube account in which she played a practical joke on her father by pretending to be in labor.
She said that the joke was retaliation for all the times Mark had duped her. Mark maintained his composure during the video, but he later admitted that he had been duped by Shay. You are such an ass, he said. I got completely punked.
