Martin rose from humble beginnings to become a well-known face on television. Our Areva Martin wiki chronicles her rise to success.
She was Born in St. Louis, Missouri
Areva Martin, who was born Areva Bell on January 28, 1962, will be 57 years old in 2019.
The Missouri native grew up in the Carr Square housing projects in North St. Louis. During her childhood, she witnessed the civil and women’s rights movements, which shaped her as a person.
Martin’s parents never married, and her father moved away soon after she was born. She first met him after graduating from Rosati Kain High School in 1980. They have developed a stronger relationship since reconnecting.
Areva Martin was raised by her mother, with whom she has a close relationship. Her mother, however, married another man and left Missouri, leaving Martin to care for her disabled grandmother.
Martin grew up without her parents, but her extended family and community cared for her. Ethel Thomas, her grandmother’s best friend, and Martin’s godmother played an important role in her upbringing.
Areva Martin frequently accompanied Thomas to her work as a janitor, where she assisted her in cleaning and taking out the trash. Martin attributes her strong work ethic to her godmother.
Martin now lives in Los Angeles, but he visits St. Louis frequently. Her older brother and cousins, as well as the majority of her family, still live there.
Areva Martin works as a Lawyer
Areva Martin grew up watching crime shows like Perry Mason, which inspired her to become a lawyer. Martin’s attorney role model was the iconic TV defense lawyer.
The young lady went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago. She paid for college with scholarships, loans, and on-campus jobs. Martin, on the other hand, was bullied by upperclassmen because of her low socioeconomic status. Despite this, she worked hard and graduated with honors.
Martin went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, where she learned some valuable life lessons outside of the classroom. She observed her peers already networking their way into corporate jobs. But she never imagined herself working in corporate law.
Areva and her husband, Ernest Martin Jr., instead established Martin & Martin, LA’s largest minority-owned law firm. They are experts in ADA, Employment and Housing Discrimination, Family Law, and School Law. She frequently works with parents of special-needs children whose civil rights have been violated.
She has an Autistic Son
Areva met Ernest Martin Jr., a native of Los Angeles, while still at Harvard. They married and founded their law firm together.
Areva and Ernest have three children: two daughters named Michael and Morgan Martin, and a son named Ernest Martin III, whom the family refers to as Marty. Marty was diagnosed with autism around the age of two.
Areva Martin admitted that she had to learn how to care for a child with autism at first. There weren’t many people to ask, however. Her personal experience inspired her and her family to become autism spectrum disorder advocates.
She co-founded Special Needs Network, a non-profit organization that serves children and families with developmental disabilities. The organization provides families with training, support groups, and even legal advice.
Her work with the Special Needs Network has earned her numerous honors and awards, including the Los Angeles County Woman of the Year Award, the L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth Award, and the KCET Local Hero Award.
She is a Writer
Martin also contributes to publications on a variety of topics. However, the books she has written based on her experiences are the most popular.
Her first book, Journey to the Top, was a step-by-step guide to professional success based on her own experience as a career woman.
Martin’s book, The Everyday Advocate: How to Stand Up for Your Child with Autism, is a well-received resource for parents of autistic children.
Make It Rain! is her most well-known book to date. How to Use the Media to Transform Your Business and Brand. “Make it Rain” would become her signature sound.
She works as a legal analyst on talk shows
Martin’s work in autism advocacy and her books have earned her appearances on television shows, which she has used to further her cause.
Martin is a regular on Dr. Phil, where she honed her ability to deliver a compelling soundbite. Her appearances on Dr. Phil led to more TV appearances where she could discuss autism.
Martin has since appeared on Anderson Cooper 360, Nancy Grace, Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight, and Dr. Drew On Call, among others. She is currently a co-host on The Doctors and a panelist on CBS’ Face The Truth, hosted by Vivica A. Fox.
Her media appearances, however, are not always successful. Martin appeared on the SiriusXM radio show hosted by Fox News anchor David Webb on January 15, 2019. Webb attributed his rise in the media to his qualifications during the segment.
“Well, David, that’s a whole ‘nother long conversation about white privilege, the things you have the privilege of doing that people of color don’t have the privilege of,” Martin responded. Martin, on the other hand, accuses a black man of “white privilege.”
Webb told her so, and she apologized, saying, “My people gave me incorrect information.” The online community, however, has chastised her for her gaffe.
