In August 2022, the 31-year-old Trap Queen rapper pleaded guilty to a cocaine-related criminal conspiracy charge. On Wednesday, Fetty Wap was sentenced to six years in prison for operating a cross-country drug trafficking operation. Fetty Wap is best known for his 2015 single Trap Queen, which is about a love affair with narcotics.

Willie Junior Maxwell II, a 31-year-old rapper with the legal name Willie Junior Maxwell II, pleaded guilty in August to a drug conspiracy charge, acknowledging participation in a large-scale scheme involving the distribution of at least 500g or more of cocaine. The charge entails a minimum prison sentence of five years.

Along with five co-defendants, Maxwell was initially detained in October 2021 and charged with conspiring to smuggle more than 100kg (220 lbs) of heroin, fentanyl, and crack cocaine from the west coast to Long Island between June 2019 and June 2020.

The scheme allegedly involved using the United States Postal Service and hidden vehicle compartments to transport drugs to the east coast, where, according to prosecutors, they would be stored before being distributed on Long Island and New Jersey. Two co-defendants of Maxwell have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.

Maxwell, a native of Paterson, New Jersey, was re-arrested in August 2022 after a judge revoked his $500,000 bail, which was secured by property he owns in Georgia, for allegedly brandishing a firearm and threatening to kill a man over FaceTime in 2021, in violation of the terms of his pre-trial release.

The rapper, whose debut single Trap Queen reached No. 2 on the Billboard listings in May 2015, pleaded guilty to the most serious charge against him, conspiracy to distribute only cocaine. The plea agreement shielded him from the possibility of receiving a life sentence if convicted of all charges against him.

Prosecutors argued for a longer sentence, asserting that Maxwell used his fame to “glamorize the drug trade” while earning millions from his music.

US attorney for the eastern district of New York Breon Peace wrote in a letter to the judge recommending a sentence of seven to nine years:

“Young people who admire the defendant and are considering selling drugs must be sent the message that selling drugs is not a glamorous lifestyle, and if they participate in this trade, they will receive lengthy prison sentences.”

During the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Maxwell expressed regret for his actions.

“I hurt my community, the people who look up to me,” he stated. “My household and myself. Sincere regret any suffering caused.

In 2019, Maxwell was also detained for allegedly assaulting three casino employees in Las Vegas. In New York in 2017, he was charged with DWI for allegedly racing on a municipal highway.
