In February of 2000, Adnan Syed, 41, was found guilty of the first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee and sentenced to life in prison. After 22 years, he was released and all accusations were withdrawn.
According to the New York Post, Adnan’s conviction was annulled on September 19, 2022, by Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn because she considered the defense team was not provided with all the necessary evidence.
Additionally, there are two other suspects who were never ruled out of the investigation. On October 11, 2022, prosecutors dismissed all charges against him in the case that made him notorious.
Furthermore, according to CNN, none of the 12 samples obtained from Hae’s body or car included Adnan’s DNA.
Adan’s attorney provided the information in the 2019 HBO documentary The Case Against Adnan Syed. Adnan’s conviction for murder was reportedly reaffirmed in March of 2023.
The Appellate Court of Maryland decided that the court violated the rights of Young Lee, the brother of Hae Min Lee, according to The New York Times.
The lower court neglected to properly notify Adnan’s family of the hearing that would ultimately release him free and overturn his conviction.

Adnan Is Not Quite Liberated
Adnan has maintained his innocence since his 17th birthday when he was detained. Even though he has been released from prison, he is not quite free.
Adnan’s release is based on Judge Phinn’s opinion that his trial was unjust, and prosecutors have 30 days to dismiss his case or request a new trial. He must wear an ankle monitor with GPS tracking for the time being.
According to CNN, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby stated,
“We have not yet declared Adnan Syed innocent.”
In the interest of fairness and justice, however, we are declaring that he is entitled to a new trial. On Tuesday, October 11, the prosecution dismissed all accusations.
The state’s attorney for Baltimore, Marilyn Mosby, told NPR that the latest DNA testing has exonerated him. The same day, she stated at a press conference, “His DNA was rejected.” She said that the inquiry is ongoing and emphasized that Adnan spent 23 years in prison for a crime for which he was wrongly convicted.
His release pleasantly surprised Adnan
According to the New York Post, Adnan’s attorney Erica Suter told reporters after his conviction was overturned,
“He stated he couldn’t believe it was true.” His mother was ecstatic to have her son back, if only temporarily, and was pictured hugging him with a great smile on her face.
The case of Adnan was the focus of a popular podcast
Adnan’s case originally attracted widespread attention in 2014, when it was featured in the first season of Sarah Koenig’s true-crime podcast Serial. Sarah investigated his case and discovered flaws in both Adnan’s defense and the evidence used against him.
According to The Guardian, the case attracted worldwide attention due to the 12-part true-crime series and even won a Peabody Award.
In 2016, shortly after Sarah’s podcast erupted on iTunes, a lower court judge requested a retrial, but the Maryland supreme court ultimately dismissed the request.
Not Everyone Appreciated Adnan’s Release
According to The Post, the victim’s brother, whose sister was strangled to death in 1999, feels “betrayed” by Adnan’s release.
Despite the fact that many individuals who had reservations about Adnan’s conviction are relieved he has a chance to be a free man, this victim’s brother feels “betrayed.” “This podcast is not for me. This is reality,” he stated during the September 19 hearing.
The state attorney of Maryland stated that she understood the brother’s emotions, but that Adnan deserves another opportunity to prove his innocence.
She stated in a news briefing,
“As the administrator of the criminal justice system, I also recognize the significance of ensuring equity, justice, and fairness.” “The defendant is entitled to the same.”
A court of appeals determined that her brother’s rights were violated when he was not given adequate notice of the release hearing for Adnan. According to PEOPLE magazine, the Appellate Court of Maryland upheld Adnan’s murder conviction in March of 2023.
