Mark Alexander Knox, better known as Flex Alexander or Flex, is a comedian, dancer, and actor. On One on One, he is most recognized for playing Flex Washington. Knox has won the NAACP Image Awards four times and the BET Comedy Awards twice. Additionally, he is the author of The Joshua Run, a graphic book.

In addition, Flex gained notoriety for his appearances on Shanice, his wife, and his reality program, Flex and Shanice (2014–2016). Alexander and his spouse have experienced a great deal, including financial ruin and several setbacks in their careers.

Flex Early Life of Alexander: He Lost A Friend To Gun Violence

On April 15, 1970, Alexander was born in Harlem, New York. Robert Whitehead and Alethia Knox are his parents. To ensure that he and his siblings had all they needed, his mother worked three or four jobs. Flex has an elder brother and a younger sister, however, it’s unknown how many of Knox’s children are present.

Robert Whitehead, Knox’s father, was a bass guitarist who died in 1989. Whitehead and Flex have only three encounters.

Flex called his father a “rolling stone” and told People that he was a man who was looking for something but didn’t know what he was looking for.

After becoming involved with some terrible people, his brother Dwayne turned to drugs and the streets. AIDS would eventually claim Dwayne’s life.

Flex Growing up in the South Bronx

At the age of 15, Mark would also abandon the family and turn to street hustling, sleeping on subway cars, and doing nearly everything to make ends meet.

When his comrade was killed in an altercation with a rival drug dealer in 1988, everything changed.

Flex was in a similar predicament. However, he managed to live when the dealer slammed his gun against Flex’s head. Knox then immediately departed from life on the streets.

How His Name Changed While Dancing

Mark majored in architecture at the Manhattan-based High School of Art and Design.

He started dancing in New York nightclubs when he was a teenager, and because of his amazing dancing abilities, he gained the moniker “Flex.”

DJ Spinderella found him later. After that, he started traveling with the rap group Salt-n-Pepa and spent three years with the dancing group.

Flex was not just a dancer but also a choreographer for Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige.

The Flex Alexander Show Was Postponed Several Times

Alexander debuted as a stand-up comedian in 1989. Eventually, he turned to acting, making his feature debut in Juice (1992). From 1992 to 1994, he was a regular cast member of the sketch comedy program Uptown Comedy Club.

Flex had his debut on television in the short-lived ABC sitcom Where I Live (1993), which starred Doug E. Doug. The studio terminated it within a year, even though it was well-received by critics.

After making cameo appearances on episodes of Sister, Sister, and The Cosby Mysteries, the comedian from New York moved to Los Angeles in 1995 to focus on acting. The NAACP winner also had a short run in 1996, when she won a major part in the comedy Homeboys in Outer Space.

Later in the year, Flex co-starred in Total Security, another brief Steven Bochco sitcom. Alexander had cameo appearances on Brooklyn South and The Parkers after the conclusion of Total Security.

He has appeared in several movies, such as She’s All That (1999) and Backroom Bodega Boyz (1998), which were released straight to video.

Additional Television Series and Movies

In the first season of the UPN comedy Girlfriends, which aired from 2000 to 2001, Shanice’s husband made an appearance as Darnell, the spouse of Maya Wilkes. To play Mark “Flex” Washington, a single parent on the UPN sitcom One on One, he departed Girlfriends. The series was written and produced by him. Alexander was nominated for two BET Comedy Awards and three NAACP Image Awards for his performance in One On One.

In the 2004 VH1 television biography Man In The Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story, the father of two played Michael Jackson. He was nominated for another NAACP Image Award as a result.

Alexander made two additional seasons of appearances on One-on-One. But for the show’s revival, the last season saw the writing of his character, reducing him to a recurrent position.

After One On One concluded, Alexander starred opposite Samuel L. Jackson in the 2006 movie Snakes on a Plane and starred in the 2007 horror movie The Hills Have Eyes 2.

Alongside Danny Glover, he also featured in Clement Virgo’s Poor Boy’s Game in a 2007 CSI: Miami episode.

The six-foot-three actor and his wife Shanice had their reality program called Flex & Shanice that ran on OWN until recently.

He has also been DJing on Zoom these days.

Flex Alexander’s Wife Claims She Was Drawn to Him Because of His Faith in God

On February 19, 2000, Alexander wed R&B singer Shanice Wilson. His spouse, Shanice Lorraine Wilson-Knox, also known as Shanice, was born on May 14, 1973, and is a dancer, singer-songwriter, and actor.

They formerly shared an apartment building in the San Fernando Valley. The artist, who is nominated for a Grammy, told HuffPost that they met in an elevator.

The singer has stated in many interviews that she originally fell in love with Flex because of his devotion to God. At first, the two were just pals. In Studio City, California, Mel’s Diner served them on their first date.

The Billboard smash songs “I Love Your Smile,” “Silent Prayer,” and “Saving Forever for You” were released by Flex’s spouse in 1991 and 1993, respectively. “When I Close My Eyes,” another popular song by Mrs. Knox from 1999, peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 list.

Shanice is well-known for her whistle range singing and coloratura soprano voice.

They are parents to two children: boy Elijah Alexander-Knox (born March 5, 2004) and daughter Imani Shekinwhistle-rangeKnox (born August 23, 2001). In June 2019, their daughter Imani received her high school diploma.

Why Were Flex and Shanice Married So Soon?

Before getting married, Mark and Shanice had only been dating for around three months.

The preacher was discussing “ghetto engagements” when the former invited his fiancée to the church. Shanice told Oprah that the pastor was tired of couples getting engaged for five or six years at a time.

In order to characterize people who were taking too long to get married, he coined the term “ghetto engagement.” After leaving the chapel and getting into the car, ToShanice to marry him right then and there, and she said yes.

The One on One actor talked about the difficult period he and his family went through when they lost their LA home in 2010 in an interview with Page Six.

It was a real estate crash, the actor claimed. When bad times arrived, he tried to cling onto the property and draw from funds because he and his wife had purchased a large amount of real estate.

Alexander intended to pass real estate on to his family and children because, at the time, he believed it was a terrific way to get wealthy. He attempted to hang on.

He and his spouse experienced financial hardships after the catastrophe, which had a significant impact on the family. The pair discussed their struggles on “Flex & Shanice,” their OWN reality program. Even their wedding bands were pawned by Shanice and Flex, although they were subsequently retrieved.

But Alexander claims he has no regrets a telling the world about their insolvency. He clarified that he had no regrets. Alexander stated that he hails from the South Bronx projects and that he is not too bothered by that kind of thing.

The family made it through, and now that their professions are back on track, they are both living the life of millionaires.

Flex had to ask his buddy for assistance in order to take his wife out on an anniversary date at one of their dtoriods.

The Bronx native said he was unable to help Shanice on their anniversary in a May 2020 Instagram live conversation with a friend named Chris.

Flex clarified that Chris had given him $350 so that Shanice and he could have a good day. The actor broke down in tears and thanked his buddies in front of the camera.

As the Alexander couple overcame their adversity throughout their presentation, fans and the pair themselves had a joyful ending. Now that they have a secure existence, the couple is concentrating on their own endea while remaining wed.

In an April 2020 interview with Fox 5, Alexander disclosed that he was collaborating with a group of individuals from Washington, DC, on a streaming platform venture that he had given the moniker CEEK. According to Shanice’s spouse, the service is centered around virtual reality goggles. His Miami, Florida-based business, CEEK, specializes in putting musicians and producers of digital material in direct contact with their fans.

However, Flex’s 20-year wife said that she was also working on her own lipstbrand, Smell by Shanice. She said the product is non-toxic and available in a vegan form.
