On August 19, 1930, Francis McCourt was born in New York City. McCourt, the eldest of three children born to Irish Catholic immigrants, resided in New York along with his brothers. McCourt’s grandparents reared him.
His four younger siblings are Margaret (who died 21 days after her 1934 birth), the twins Oliver and Eugene, and Malachy. Amid the Great Depression, the family moved back to Ireland the same year his sister died. He dropped out of school when he was thirteen years old.

How did Frank McCourt start his Professional Career?
Frank McCourt was an educator and author of American-Irish descent. The tragicomic account of the pain and filth of McCourt’s early life, Angela’s Ashes, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. In addition to being an amazing writer, he is also an excellent teacher.
His book “Angela Ashes” helped him achieve rapid international success. For their work, he has won multiple awards, including the esteemed Pulitzer Prize.
Career in Professionals of Frank McCourt At the age of 19, he departed Ireland in 1949 and began working in several jobs, including one as a telegraph delivery boy, to support himself. He took a boat from Cork to New York City.
He ran into a priest he had met on the ship, and it was because of the priest that he was able to secure housing and a job at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. McCourt contributed $10 a week, out of his earnings of about $26, to his mother in Limerick.
McCourt used his educational advantages to secure entrance to New York University. In 1957, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from New York University. The annual Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography went to McCourt in 1997.
He was a member of the National Arts Club and the recipient of the Award of Excellence from The International Center in New York.
The American Academy of Achievement presented him with the Golden Plate Award in 1999. The University of Western Ontario bestowed an honorary degree upon McCourt in 2002.
In 2011, Malachy McCourt opened the Frank McCourt Museum at Leamy House on Hartstonge Street in Limerick. It was called the Leamy School when Frank and his brother Malachy went there.
