Frank Sinatra Musical Will Make Its Debut In Birmingham

Frank Sinatra

Producers have confirmed that a musical based on the life of the late American singer Frank Sinatra will launch in Birmingham in September.

Come Fly with Me, My Way, and New York, New York was among the singer’s most popular songs prior to her death in 1998.

On September 23, Sinatra: The Musical will have its global premiere at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

It will be the 70th anniversary of Sinatra’s performance in the city during his 1953 UK tour.

The singer’s daughter, Tina Sinatra, feels that the musical would throw new light on her father’s life.

She stated in a statement,

“I am very proud of our new musical production, and I am especially pleased because, for the first time, you will see a perspective on my father that you have never seen before.”

Writer Joe DiPietro (known for What’s New, Pussycat? and Memphis) and Tony Award-winning director Kathleen Marshall collaborate on the production (Anything Goes and The Pajama Game).

On Ol’ Blue Eyes’ influence, DiPietro stated,

“When I was a child, my grandmother’s kitchen featured two pictures: the Pope and Frank Sinatra.

“So, to sit down with Tina Sinatra and hear stories about her father that no one else knows, and then to be able to put those stories on stage, I believe it will result in a surprising and exciting new musical.”

Marshall stated that they aimed to “create a theatrical evening as glamorous, refined, and elegant as Mr. Sinatra, with wonderful music from the American Songbook.”
