Freema Agyeman, a star of Doctor Who will participate in a new stage adaptation of God of Carnage, a dark comedy that won Tony and Olivier awards.
The actress, who is best known for playing Doctor Who’s sidekick Martha Jones, most recently appeared in the TV comedy Dreamland with Lily Allen.
She will portray Veronique Vallon in the Lyric Hammersmith Theater’s September production of Yasmina Reza’s play. In an interview with BBC News, Agyeman said she was “beyond thrilled” to be performing again.
Two sets of parents are shown in the narrative of God of Carnage when one 11-year-old destroys his classmate’s two front teeth during a fight on the playground.
The parents of the boys meet to discuss their child’s altercation in a reportedly calm and reasonable manner. But as the parents themselves have temper tantrums, call their children names, and cry, anarchy breaks out.
“I’m happy to be staying in the dark comedy genre post-Dreamland – God of Carnage made me gasp and chuckle in equal measure,” Agyeman added.
“I’m excited to work with director Nicholai La Barrie, whose enthusiasm is contagious, and I look forward to performing in this play alongside the fantastic cast!”
Christopher Hampton, who won an Oscar in 2021 for best-adapted screenplay for The Father, translated Reza’s play for an audience in English.
