British drummer Fuzz Townshend, whose real name is John Richard Keith Townshend, plays indie rock. He works as a technical editor for Practical Classics, a motoring journalist for Channel 4/More4, and a TV personality for the National Geographic Channel’s Car SOS.

When he was ten years old, his mother won a Vauxhall Chevette in a national newspaper competition. He’s always been interested in music, so his mother used the award money to get him a drum set.

He is a skilled drummer who studied drumming with local jazz artist Al Reed. Because of his unusual hair, his classmates called him Fizz and he went by that moniker. At twelve years old, he made his stage debut in March 1977.

After completing his degree, he also obtained an apprenticeship with the regional bus company, West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive, and started working on buses at the PTE’s Dudley garage. After Fuzz joined former Beat frontman Ranking Roger and his band General Public, he was able to travel to the US and launch his musical career.

He was subsequently asked to join a local indie band called Pop Will Itself, and he drummed for them for the following four and a half years. Along with Nine Inch Nails, they toured North America and charted in the United Kingdom for both singles and albums.

His debut solo single, “Hello Darling,” peaked at No. 51 in the UK charts in 1996. He joined Echo Records the next year. His first album, Far In, came out in the UK in 1999, and his second album, Fuzz Townshend, came out in 2002.

Following that, in 2004 he started teaching part-time at a college, specializing in music practice and technology. During this period, his former band PWEI decided to reunite. In addition to his musical pursuits, he indicated a desire to work at an auto repair shop.

A TV production company approached him to do a screen test at his Westgate Classical garage for a new show called Car SOS. There, he received a job offer, and the company was selected to serve as the show’s backdrop.

In the UK, Car SOS was a television program that ran on Fox Channel, National Geographic Channel, Channel 4, and More4. On April 9, 2015, the third season of Car SOS debuted on the National Geographic Channel.

Before opting to become independent and launch his own historic car restoration business, Westgate Classics, in March 2011, he worked as a technical editor for Practical Classics.

He left Westgate Classics with fellow enthusiast Dave Tassell to launch To-Ta Classics in Oldbury, West Midlands. Moreover, Classical Friendly Ltd., his most recent creation, is a network of establishments that welcome classic cars and offer comprehensive safety checks and standardized maintenance schedules for MoT-exempt vintage automobiles.
