His siblings said Fernandez’s mother and stepfather laughed at him while mistreating him. Prosecutors say Aguirre assaulted Fernandez because he suspected she was homosexual. The assault and torture targeted Fernandez but also his siblings.
Pearl Fernandez reported her child Gabriel Fernandez was not breathing to 9-1-1 on May 22, 2013. Fernandez was fatally beaten by his mother and Aguirre for not cleaning his toys.
First responders found him naked and injured on the ground. Aguirre said Fernandez was “homosexual.” Paramedics declared him brain dead and took him to the hospital. On May 24, 2013, he died at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles two days later. The official autopsy found brutal force injuries, negligence, and hunger killed him at eight.

Gabriel died after severe and protracted physical and emotional abuse, according to his autopsy. The eight-year-old youngster died at 59 pounds, well below the norm for his age. Pearl and Arnold Contreras raised Gabriel Fernandez.
Arnold was Pearl’s lover for years before Gabriel’s birth. Gabriel was exposed to Pearl and Arnold’s substance misuse and marital violence as a child. Gabriel died aged 8 in 2013 from his parents’ physical violence and neglect.
Pearl Fernandez and Arnold Contreras were convicted of Gabriel’s murder in 2018. Contreras received the death penalty, while Fernandez received life without parole. The case raised awareness of child abuse and neglect in the US and changed California child welfare legislation.
