George Logan, demise was confirmed by UK entertainer and ‘Benidorm’ actor Bobby Crush, 69, who played drag artist Dr. Evadne Hinge in the landmark BBC sitcom ‘Hinge and Bracket’ He was best known for his role as drag artist Dr. Evadne Hinge in ‘Hinge and Bracket’.
He posted on social media on Sunday (21.05.23):
“RIP George Logan, also known as ‘Dr. Evadne Hinge’ of ‘Hinge and Bracket’.
“In 1989, we both appeared in this magnificent pantomime at the Theatre Royal Plymouth… Today’s news of his departure saddens me.”
The tribute prompted an avalanche of tributes from fans and friends who affectionately recalled George and his co-star Patrick Fyffe, who drew millions of television viewers in the 1970s and 1980s when the series ran from 1978 to 1981.
They also appeared as their characters in a number of other popular television programs, including ‘The Ronnie Corbett Show’ and ‘The Good Old Days’ on the BBC, and were credited with popularizing drag acts.
In his autobiography ‘A Boy Called Audrey’, published in 2015, George described how he grew up homosexual in Scotland during the 1960s, stating, “A gay bar near where I lived hosted drag shows. One day, the pianist failed to appear. The landlady asked, “Do you play the piano? I’ll pay you two shillings to perform?’ Thus, I became the standard pianist.
“As I observed all of these performances, I realized they were receiving eight pounds for jokes I had heard a hundred times. I reasoned, ‘I could do that while playing the piano and keep the entire ten pounds to myself.
“That’s how I came into the entertainment industry, although I didn’t get the ten pounds. As a beginner, I received eight pounds for completing both tasks, but eight pounds for a half-hour’s work wasn’t awful.”
