Before his unexpected death, many wondered about George Winterling’s health. In an interview with News4jax, the longest-serving Channel 4 employee recounted his near-death experience. He collapsed at home in September 2011, leaving him critically ill. When rescue responders arrived, his heart had stopped.

Following emergency heart surgery, he spent weeks in the hospital and underwent extensive rehabilitation. After his long recuperation, he resumed weather broadcasting at WJXT. The morning show featured him on November 21, 2011, giving viewers his valuable advice. No disease or health issues were reported until his June 21, 2023 death. Unfortunately, his health state before death is unclear.
