Gerrard Flores died in a wrestling match at Arvada West High School on January 7 at noon. Flores experienced a medical emergency during the game, and firefighters and police officers responded. Attempts to resuscitate Flores were ineffective, according to police Public Information Officer Dave Snelling. Flores was rushed to the hospital by ambulance but died on the way and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“One of the referees at the wrestling tournament became ill,” Snelling stated in a statement. Arvada firefighters and police officers responded, and he was treated medically. Despite all resuscitation efforts, he died.”

The wrestling event was canceled after Flores died. Flores was well-known in the Colorado wrestling community. He was a former collegiate wrestler who graduated from Northeastern Jr. College with a business administration degree in 1988. Flores was a wrestling referee as well as a supervisor for Time Warner Cable.

As a tribute to Flores, the Colorado Wrestling Facebook page shared a link to a 9News article on him. Flores officiated not just wrestling matches, but also other sports. Flores has shared several Denver Broncos photographs on Facebook. He would post schedules of nearby wrestling events on his social media pages regularly.

Gerrard Flores, a native of Colorado, has two sons, Trea and Tristin Flores. His two sons have not responded, but have shared images of themselves with their father. Tera Flores, a musician, shared a childhood photo of himself sitting on his father’s knee on Twitter. In the post’s description, he included a broken heart emoji.

Gerrard’s youngest son, Tristin Gerrard, posted a photo of himself with his father at Fenway Park. Gerrard can be seen officiating at children’s baseball games in videos. His sister, Malessa Hernandez, released a video of her brother umpiring multiple baseball games.

Malessa reshared the video on her Facebook page when one of the children’s parents shared it on her page. The video’s uploader, Mindy L. Albert, remarked, “You touched so many of these young kids’ lives through sports and gave many kids opportunities to shine.”

Chaparral Wrestling Club also paid tribute to the legendary referee. The Wrestling Club captioned photographs of Gerrard from wrestling events, “If you’ve spent any amount of time around youth wrestling over the years, you knew Gearrard.”

They went on, “The wrestling community has lost a wonderful person!” He made so many contributions to the sport and to our children.”
