Gervonta Davis remains unbeaten after a devastating body blow from Garcia terminates their highly anticipated bout. Gervonta “Tank” Davis defeated “King” Ryan Garcia for the first time in his career with a body strike in the seventh round of their championship bout in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Davis, a 28-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland, has won five world titles in the super-featherweight, lightweight, and super-lightweight divisions and has a record of 29-0 with 27 knockouts.
Saturday night, in the second round, Davis knocked out 24-year-old Garcia with a vicious left overhand counterpunch.
Garcia had some strong moments during the fight, but after the second round, Davis appeared to have the upper hand.
Davis took advantage of an advancing Garcia and landed a precisely placed punch to Garcia’s ribs to deliver the knockout blow.
Garcia regained his balance and appeared to be able to continue fighting, firing a left jab into the air before falling to one knee.
Davis stated after the fight,
“It was a good shot.” “I believed he would stand up. I was looking at him and urging him to stand up.
“And he just shook his head.”
This much-anticipated bout, which took place at a catchweight of 136 pounds (62 kilograms), did not involve a championship bout.
This combat, which was broadcast live on pay-per-view, had numerous bragging rights and financial benefits at stake.
The fight also drew a celebrity-studded crowd to the sold-out T-Mobile Arena, with former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson in attendance.
Davis proclaimed after the match,
“I am the face of boxing.”
“I just watched Rihanna perform at the Super Bowl, and I thought, ‘One day, that will be me,’ and here we are,” he said.
“It’s a dream come true, but the job is never done until retirement, so I’ll keep my head down, remain humble, and continue to work.”
Garcia, whose record is now 23-1 with 19 knockouts, must return to the drawing board after suffering his first loss.
Garcia was gracious in defeat, labeling it “an honor” to be in the ring with Davis after a contentious buildup.
“He just caught me with a good shot,” said Garcia. I simply could not recover. Snuck up on me and captured me unawares.”
He declined to elucidate, but when pressed, he admitted he was unable to breathe.
“I intended to get back up, but I was unable to,” he said.
