(G)I-DLE Soyeon

As several internet users discovered that the song in issue had been filed with the KOMCA under the singer’s identity rather than that of the ostensibly legal writers, the plagiarism scandal concerning (G)I-DLE member Soyeon took a new turn.

On February 27, 2022, the well-known idol appeared on MBC’s idol audition program My Teenage Girl, where Soyeon works as a mentor, and performed the now-controversial song SUN. Many ATEEZ fans were shocked to learn that the (G)I-DLE leader was previously listed as the song’s composer and writer.

SUN credited only (G)I-Soyeon DLEs and Pop Time at the KOMCA registration.

Edenary, the WAVE’s composer, was added to the SUN credit list after receiving a lot of criticism. It now appears that the Korea Song Copyright Association (KOMCA), where the music was registered late, was not included in the update. At the time of the controversy, So-Yeon and CUBE Entertainment both expressed regret for the claimed copying. Since Edenary team members maintained they were not informed about the attribution, their efforts to acknowledge the original creators were criticized even then.

Internet users have recently brought up the fact that, despite SUN being officially registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association, the composition credits are exclusively given to Soyeon and Pop Time, with Edenary notably absent. This was largely brought up by followers of ATEEZ. The track’s description of popular streaming services no longer includes the producer team’s identity.

Many have criticized this action, accusing (G)I-DLE Soyeon and the agency of attempting to “sweep the situation under the rug.” A lot of people also said they were trying to defend their immoral act of plagiarism for the Korea Music Copyright Association. On the other hand, many Soyeon supporters contended that the singer had every right to take full credit for the song. They added that because KOMCA is so strict about plagiarism, SUN is not plagiarized.

Both the apology and the justification, however, were rejected by KQ Entertainment, and ATEEZ supporters said that the apology was merely an effort to save face.
