Glenn Hilliard A Maryland Deputy Was Shot Dead

Glenn Hilliard

According to the sheriff’s office, Wicomico County, Maryland, deputy sheriff Glenn Hilliard was shot and died on Sunday following a runaway.

A suspect wanted in several jurisdictions for “many charges” was seen leaving a Pittsville apartment building by Glenn Hilliard. The sheriff’s office claims that he then pursued the suspect on foot. Tragically, Hilliard was wounded while attempting to apprehend the criminal.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook to honor a fallen hero:

“Deputy Glenn Hilliard was a wonderful public servant to the people of Wicomico County and the State of Maryland. He was a son, husband, and father of three lovely children. Our thoughts and prayers are with Glenn’s family at this awful time.

Police officer Deputy First Class Hilliard, 41, has served the force for 16 years. Hilliard was the 25th law enforcement official to be shot and killed while performing their duties this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Hillard worked in several sheriff’s office divisions before asking to go back on patrol.

The next Wednesday, June 22, he would have turned 42. Glenn Hilliard is survived by his wife and three kids. The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office expressed “heartbreak at this pointless and awful murder,” as the brave police officer’s passing shocked his coworkers. On Facebook, the department posted the following statement:

The Sheriff’s Office family has been emotionally devastated by this loss, but we will do all in our power to honor Glenn and support those who knew and cared for him.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from the surrounding area conducted a thorough search before they were able to find the man. The guy who was arrested and is currently being held without bond constituted no more threat, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Austin Davidson was the suspect, though his name had not previously been made public, according to a tweet from the Wicomico Sheriff.

FBI figures show that the number of American law enforcement officers killed on purpose while performing their duties increased last year, paralleling an increase in homicides and gun violence. Regarding homicides, Chuck Wexler of the Police Executive Research Forum said:

Police officers are placed right in the middle of an increase in violence when there are more homicides and shootings as a result.
