Glennon Doyle, a 46-year-old novelist, and activist discussed anorexia and her mental health diagnoses on her podcast We Can Do Hard Things on January 3, 2022. In an Instagram post, Doyle revealed the topic of her upcoming podcast conversation.
Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as anorexia, is an eating disorder in which a person drastically changes their eating habits. They reduce their calorie and carbohydrate intake, which results in weight loss. Anorexic people are unable to maintain an appropriate body weight for their age, height, and stature.
They may engage in obsessive exercise regimens and feel the need to purge the food they consume, either through intentional vomiting or by using laxatives. Anorexic people frequently have a distorted self-image and a strong fear of gaining weight. Extreme weight loss in anorexics can lead to malnutrition and other serious health problems. In extreme cases, the patient may even die.
Glennon Doyle founded the non-profit organization Together Rising, which is entirely run by women. Together Rising has raised over $25 million for disadvantaged children, women, and families. Doyle is also the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling novel Untamed.
In less than five months after its release, the book sold over one million copies. She also wrote Love Warrior and Carry on, Warrior. Glennon Doyle had three children with Craig Melton, whom she married from 2002 to 2016. She met Abby Wambach in 2016 and claimed to have instantly fallen in love with her. They married in 2017 and intend to move to Hermosa Beach, California, in 2021.
Glennon Doyle initially thought she was having bulimia relapses
Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast is frequently co-hosted by her wife, former American soccer star Abby Wambach, who is now a coach, and her sister, Amanda Doyle. Glennon Doyle recently revealed on her podcast that she thought she was recovering from bulimia, an eating disorder.
Doyle was diagnosed with anorexia after years of maintaining that mindset, which caused her to go into denial and shock. Glennon Doyle sought medical attention first because she thought she was relapsing from bulimia. She told the doctors she wanted to learn how to control these relapses so she could be less afraid and free of any looming threat.
According to Today, Doyle’s doctor informed her after her medical evaluation that her medical history and testing revealed she had anorexia. She was clearly upset by the news. Doyle went on to say how difficult it was for her to accept that recovering from anorexia would necessitate her being strong.
She and her wife had an intimate conversation in the kitchen, during which Wambach informed her that she couldn’t do much for Doyle and that he had to find the strength to fight the war alone.
Wambach told Doyle on the sponsored podcast, according to Today:
“It was difficult for me to say this. I felt compelled to say it aloud because you needed complete control of this process.”
Doyle responded by recalling feeling cold to the bone at the time. She claimed to have never felt more alone in her body. Doyle went on to say that everyone told her she was the one who was sick and that she needed to get well. Glennon Doyle quickly began reading anorexia literature in order to learn more about the eating disorder. She stated that this resulted in a significant shift in her perspective.
Doyle expressed her thoughts on the works when she said:
“I started reading this book about anorexia’s life. I’m not sure how to describe the feeling of reading things that you thought were a part of your personality and identity, only to discover that they’re actually a collection of symptoms of an effing sickness.”
She told viewers how amazing it was that she was a person whose work was built on introspection and discussing the complexities of human identity, but she was completely unaware of this knowledge about herself. Doyle admitted that it was embarrassing for her.
Doyle stated that she was still suffering from anorexia. She thought back on how she dealt with bulimia over two decades ago. Doyle admitted to being “horribly bulimic” for a long time before becoming pregnant.
Glennon Doyle talked about her battle with bulimia and how she used to discipline, control, and determination to overcome the eating disorder. Doyle teased the podcast episode on Instagram, saying that she would rather talk about her anorexia now than wait until her life was “beautiful and shining” again.
