Coleman could have faced nearly 43 years in prison if she had insisted on a trial. Paul Meyer, the defense counsel, claimed Grace has begun to change:
We respect the judge’s discernment in weighing the tragic incident against Grace Coleman’s age, complete acceptance of responsibility, and strong recovery as well as her year of altruistic community service while she was detained.
