On January 17, 2023, El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen passed away. El Paso’s city government took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to convey the heartbreaking news. They said they were devastated to report the passing of longtime Police Chief Greg Allen. Allen’s cause of death is still unknown.

Greg, however, had been recuperating in the hospital following a medical procedure, per KTSM. Tributes have flooded in from all across the world in the wake of the tragedy. A heartfelt message was given by El Paso Fire Department. The El Paso Fire Department stated, “Our hearts and prayers are with Chief Allen’s loved ones, as well as our brothers and sisters in the El Paso Police Department.”

They also praised the late celebrity for his expertise, friendliness, and volunteer work in the community. “May you rest in peace, Sir,” they said. Tommy Gonzalez, the municipal manager, expressed a similar level of sadness and said that it was hard for them.

The Professional Career of Greg Allen

Around 1950 was Greg Allen’s birth year. He held a number of positions throughout his 40 years with the organization (patrol officers, sergeant, lieutenant, deputy chief, etc.). Greg Allen was a field officer and supervisor with the Tactical Section and SWAT for many years. He was the SWAT Unit’s first and only full-time supervisor. At the University of Texas at El Paso, Allen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1975.

He was elected as an honorary member to the El Paso Boxing and Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1995. From 2010 through 2013, El Paso received the title of “The Safest Large City” in the US four years in a row. There were some controversies during Greg’s leadership. He referred to Black Lives Matter as a “radical hate group” in 2016.
