Following the success of his previous film, Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro is set to return with another animated film, a version of The Buried Giant.
The video will also be produced for Netflix. Guillermo del Toro, who also worked on Pinocchio, is said to have enlisted the help of the stop-motion animation company ShadowMachine for The Buried Giant. The Oscar-nominated adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s children’s book has already received widespread acclaim for its visual style and storytelling abilities.
The author of Cabinet of Curiosities made his first foray into stop-motion animation with the translation of Carlo Collodi’s book. The Buried Giant, like del Toro’s previous film, should combine elements of magical realism, creatures, and symbolic grandeur.

While details about Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming project are scarce, the director has revealed that he has already begun writing a screenplay with Dennis Kelly. The film will be based on the fantastical novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro.
The plot of the novel revolves around an elderly British couple, Axl and Beatrice, who lives in a fictitious post-Arthurian England where no one can retain long-term memories. After suspecting that they may have a child, the couple sets out to find it. Given del Toro’s unique take on the story, it should be an entertaining film. In a recent comment about the film, the director stated:
“The Buried Giant continues my animation collaboration with Netflix and our quest for stop-motion as a means to convey complicated tales and create infinite worlds. It is both an honor and a huge responsibility for me to direct this script, which Dennis Kelly and I are translating from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and creative novel.”
Netflix Cinema Head Scott Stuber added:
“Guillermo del Toro is a master of his craft and a visionary. We couldn’t be happier with the honor for his Pinocchio, and we’re looking forward to continuing our artistic collaboration as he works on his next project with Netflix.”
Pinocchio, directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson, became one of the most well-known films of 2022, earning Academy nominations and accolades worldwide. Del Toro had just won the BAFTA for best animated film a few days before. It was also a top ten film in nearly 100 countries.
