Charles A. “Gus” Manning was conceived in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 8, 2023. He attended Rule High School and participated in World War II service with the US Marine Corps.
Manning was a fit young man who favored baseball and football. Manning attended the University of Tennessee, where he played football as a walk-on in 1947. He received a baseball varsity letter in 1948 as well. Manning, a Knoxville native, earned his degree from the University of Tennessee in 1950.
Gus was hired in 1951 by General Robert R. Neyland to serve as the director of sports information. Till his retirement in 2000, Manning spent more than 50 years working for the University of Tennessee’s athletic department. After retiring, he continued to assist the UT athletics director on a freelance basis.
At UT, Manning had a variety of roles, including that of director of sports information, senior associate athletics director, and administrative assistant. All parts of the athletics department’s operations fell under the purview of his role. On Sunday, February 12, 2023, Manning, 99, passed away in the Little Creek Nursing Center.

Gus Manning was honored by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame, and the TSSAA Football Officials Hall of Fame at the University of Tennessee. In 1989, the College Athletics Business Managers Association selected him as its national business manager of the year.
He served as the Southeastern Conference’s business manager as well as its sports information director. The Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame presented Manning with the Pat Summitt Ignite Greatness Award in 2019. The best accomplishment for the Tennessee icon came in 2015 when a gate in Neyland Stadium was named in his honor.

Manning was well-known for attending 608 consecutive football games for the Volunteers. In 2003, while traveling to the Kentucky game in Lexington, he slipped on some ice and broke his run.
